The Renewable Energy Trade Promotion Service, in conjunction with UKTI, is leading a trade delegation to establish contacts with key industry and government bodies through a targeted visit programme in Beijing, from 29-31 October and subsequently hosting a UK pavilion at Wind Power Shanghai, from 1-3 November, on which up to 10 UK companies can exhibit free of charge. After special negotiation with the organisers, UK companies can also submit papers to the conference during the coming weeks.

Trade Promoter John Buckley will be visiting China in September to prepare for this wind visit programme. It would aid preperation to know who will be involved in this activity as soon as possible, so get in touch with the RETPS team if you are interested.

Market background
The wind energy sector in China is growing more quickly than predicted and an interest in offshore wind is emerging. With over 2 GW of wind capacity currently installed, the industry in China anticipates that the total by 2010 will greatly exceed the official target of 4 GW, and will probably be double this level. This rate of growth seems likely to continue, with good prospects of far exceeding also the 30 GW official target for 2020. An interest in offshore wind power is sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission, and seems to be centred on Shangahi.
In practice, the rate of growth of the industry seems to be constrained only by domestic manufacturing capacity. This capacity itself is growing quickly, with investment in China by most of the major international turbine manufacturers, in addition to the emergence of indigenous manufacturers. The pressure on wind supply chain and supportive services experienced internationally seems to be replicated in China, providing good opportunties for market entry and growth by UK companies with these capabilities, as well as developers at this formative stage of the industry in China.
