Game5U is the largest mobile games publisher in China via the platform of internet. They have specialised staff checking the internet all the time to protect games IPR.

The CEO, Mr. Wang used to work as a service provider (SP), knowing well the working model between SPs and mobile operators. In the current mobile games market in China, there are mainly 3 ways to distribute mobile games:

Via internet: free downloading, but being charged for playing or acquiring tools, etc.
Via mobile manufacturers and retailing channels as pre-embedded games: the profits from this is comparatively low
Via " treasure box" channel of China Mobile: Most Chinese SPs are using this model. However, this is not advised for the newly entered foreign companies, as often companies are required to have good relationship with China Mobile at both national and regional level before applying.
Game5U is focusing on the internet publishing. Players pay for the games via SMS messages. After years of developing, Game5U has accumulated great internet resources and credibility in the sector. Mr. Wang predicts that year 2011 will be the booming period for mobile games in China, especially after the 3G which will make downloading much quicker and the cost much less. At the moment, most SPs are struggling hard to get businesses from China Mobile. With the arrival of 3G, Game5U will also target to increase their business with China telecom and China Unicom.

In terms of importing foreign games to China, the most common means is to partner on a revenue-sharing basis. According to Mr. Wang, it is not the normal practice for Chinese Software companies or SPs to buy copyright totally from games developers. Mr. Wang encourages UK companies to understand the Chinese Characteristic market.

As for Game5U, the profit for games developers would be about 10-15% of the total revenue, roughly on a half-half share.

Game5U now would like to work with games developers directly instead of by partnering with SPs and publish games on its internet channels.
