Telecommunication
Traditional telephone switch
The telephone penetration rate is still low in Sichaun (22%). The Government target is to increase this rate to 40% in next five years. Local telecom companies are expanding switch capacity on the base of the existing system (e.g. s12, EWSD, F150 etc.). The rapid expansion of urban area is another key point to push forward the demand of telephone switch. For example, Chengdu City is expected to expand six times in the new urban planning. Telecom operators have to build up new network to meet the increasing demand. Under such situation, there should be good market opportunity for Comprehensive Access Equipment.
Trunk transmission system
The present high capacity 2.5G SDH cannot satisfy the data and multimedia demand. DWDM links and 10G SDH system is gradually being introduced to connect high volume traffic towns in Sichuan. Business opportunities exist in network technology, which is able to meet the requirement of voice and data transmission, such as MSTP, RPR.
Data service
ATM, IP core networks and broadband access network is being constructed for multi-service access subscribers (ADSL, FDDX+LAN etc.). There is urgent demand of the testing for the ADSL line and correspondent service supporting system.
Software
The main telecommunication operators in Sichuan such as China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile spend heavily on telecommunications related software for office automation, call centre, management system, ERP and etc. OSS (operation support system) like Real time and comprehensive billing and charging system, DRM and so forth needed to be reengineered enhanced for incumbent.
Value Added Services
The value-added services are becoming a competitive edge of operators to retain their customers. Telecom operators contract with value added service providers to versatile their service.
CDMA Expansion
China Unicom launched CDMA-2000 in 2002. The company is investing heavily on the expansion of CDMA network to increase the coverage rate and strengthen its edge to compete with China Mobile. Equipment relating to CDMA infrastructure such as Antennas, testing instrument, Access facility will be required during the expansion.
3G
3G licence is expected to grant to all major operators in 2004. WCDMA, CDMA-2000 and TD-SCDMA will all get opportunity to enter the market soon.

The commercial opportunities are growing in the service provision (SP). The operators are particularly keen to diversify and generate profit from the area of application and content supplying on GSM/GPRS/CDMA-2000 because the value-added services are becoming a competitive edge of operators to retain their customers. The investment in telecommunication sector is moving from hardware to software. There has been a lot of service provider signed up with the operators to offer value added business such as SMS, information (news, weather forecast…), games, QQ, e-business (linking with banks and security companies), chat and so on. But it is far from enough, according to the operators who are expecting an explosive growth in the area. These operators welcome British SP to come to Chongqing to showcase the expertise and discuss any potential business. They also interested in meeting with British telecom operators to exchange ideas on the development of value added service.
