Guangdong province in South China, one of China's manufacturing base, contributes over 10 per cent to the national GDP and one third to the national import & export volume. However, the province's fast growing economy has been achieved at cost of severe water pollution. Guangdong plans to invest US$6 billion by 2010 in wastewater treatment. In addition to government investment, the government is making efforts to attract private and foreign finance. Amongst 62 operational wastewater treatment plants, 10 of them were built in BOT or TOT terms. 124 projects are under construction and in favor of BOT and TOT finance.
