Nan Tou Ancient City--also known as Xin An Ancient City--located in Shenzhen Nan Shan District, was built in year 1394 (27th year of Empire ZHU Yuanzhang, Ming Dynasty). It was built in accordance with the topography, lying on the hill and facing the sea. It is an irregular rectangle with the lengths of 680 meters east to west and 500 meters north to south. There were nine streets (six longitudinal ones and three transverse ones), so this ancient city was also called "Nine Streets", but now only 8 of them survived which are now residences. Only a few ancient buildings are preserved till now. Except for the city and the gate was built in Ming Dynasty, other buildings like Dong Guan Hall, Wen Tianxiang Temple and Empire Guan Temple were built in Qing Dynasty or Republican Period.

Shenzhen is losing its precious Ling Nan Culture characteristics in terms of architecture, due to time being and population expanding. Meanwhile, the infrastructures within the ancient city are not updated, and quality of the environment needs urgent improvement. To well preserve the culture and heritage, Nan Shan Government decided to hold a competition in node design of two main streets (East and South) and the park outside the South Gate.

The competition is composed street node and park design and regeneration. All participants are required to finish both parts. Two parts will be evaluated separately.

Seven to eight design firms will be selected to participate in the competition according to previous projects and experience. The finalists will receive compensation and the winner will get the commission of implementing its scheme. Detailed information concerning with the brief, site visit and schedule will be issued later.
