Event East Midlands Market Visit to Sichuan and Chongqing incl. EU-China Business &Technology Cooperation Fair
Date October 14th – 21st 2009

Leading China’s Go West strategy to close the gap between China’s East and West, Chongqing and Chengdu are two pilot cities for industrial, economic and financial reform. They offer a massive market with increasing purchasing power, rich natural resources, major infrastructure building programmes, rapid development of industries, plentiful supply of labour, less competition (than coastal cities) and strong Municipal and Provincial Government support due to the strong links between East Midlands and this region.

Despite the global economic downturn the economy in Chengdu and Chongqing has continued to perform strongly with GDP growth in quarter 1 maintained at 10.8% and 9% respectively.

In 2008 UK enjoyed a positive balance of trade, with exports to Chongqing up 27% to $81m (industrial, power, automotive-related equipment) and exports to Sichuan up 28% to $107m. East Midlands companies have been successful in securing sales and partnerships with companies in this region of China.
